This is really an excellent idea! But I dunno if it's easily doable or even if it's not going to be too heavy on the servers.

Salut! Glad to know an admin approves. I don't know if it's heavy and hard to implement, though it doesn't seem like this for me (I know nothing about this anyway). What I know is that it'd be very useful. Hard to not think of it when I see all those car related tags in a mess. Could also work well with anime characters for example.

I would have to add a fulltext search index on the tags table. Search speed and accuracy would be much better but inserting new tags to that table would be a bit slower.

Idea is good, but sometimes number of suggestions is too large to display in a single list (e.g. I've never seen tag at suggestions). This idea will increase number of suggestions => need to modify the drop-down list. For example add scrolling.

What if something like this were implemented only when someone is attempting to create a new tag?

Rather than have a lengthy drop down list appear whenever someone tags an image, have the tag suggestion only kick in when a user is creating a new tag?

The tags currently used on here are "policed" pretty well by the more conscientious users already. It's the constant stream of newly created "bad" or redundant tags that are bothersome.

It would stop someone from creating a Miku Hatsune tag when already exists, without overburdening people who already know the tag is there.

Or could have a suggest button? Keep current functionality, but let people push a button to get a list of suggestions that uses the new code
