I've been using FastPictureViewer Professional (by Axel Rietschin Software Developments) for some years now. Great for viewing especially photographs and wallpapers.

XNView on Windows. The shortcuts are easy and work fast when changing viewing size and browsing between images. It has other advanced features for changing timestamps, renaming on various parameters in batch, resize and other kind of processing in batch, etc.

Picasa on Windows when in the need for some blingy face recognition. Otherwise XNView all the way!

I never understand why people use 3rd party image viewers.
What do they offer compared to Windows Photo Viewer?

i use picasa, latest version
as MrCrashdummy asked:

i use picasa because i can upload and share fast,
i can make albums without messing in the actual directory layout,
and picasa allows faces to be tagged(with auto-recognition), to find pictures of certain persons fast.

further it has a -in my opinion- better lay-out then the default viewer,
and lots of functions like auto-organising, batch-renaming, and lots more I can't remember :)

And what about the loading time? Default loads almost instantly.
Does Picasa do that too? If so, I'm sold.
