I should also probably offer my two cents instead of just being an idiot and show off my desktop. (my e-penis beat my brain in the thought process)
Low contrast/simple wallpapers tend to be more attractive for me, there is something to be said about how good something looks when it's in it's most simplistic form. Rocketdock is a pretty awesome feature too (the sketched icons on the top), I instantly fell in love with it when I downloaded it after looking at some fellow wallbasians desktops. The monochromatic and simple desktop tends to be easy on the eyes and just feels different than your typical desktop........Also I can't wait until The Dark Knight Rises comes out.Awesome!

My current desktop, which I am really proud of YAY!

I usually put my junk towards the edges of the screen so I have space for my windows and stuff in the middle. Because of this I tend to prefer simple wallpapers with the focus to one corner. Apart from that though, I think I'm pretty irregular in my desktop habits. I like mixing it up.

On that note...

The best part is that I never use my desktop icons at all; I only use 3 items in the taskbar and 2 others launch themselves when I start my laptop up.
Of course, I have a CPU meter, a fancy clock, a weather app, a currency gauge, and an HP drag-and-drop app for utility. Awesome!

If you use Theme Manager you can easily change those files.

I only just saw those posts about resource usage by Rainmeter, and if that's the same for me then it would be less than the Apple Photo Stream and Fraps. That's not bad... I guess I was just being paranoid. Damn you guys, making me try it out for a third time. I was planning on sleeping tonight, but no, I'll be up tweaking a new killer app. WTF?!

Who cares what's on desktop really? Rarely ever look at it after start-up, unless I'm taking a quick glance at Rainmeter. The only thing I actually interact with is .minecraft.

So my mantra:
1. Don't over-complicate things with themes.
2. Don't bloat machine with hundreds of Rainmeter skin downloads you never use. :P
3. Dark wallpaper.
4. Keep icons on desktop just to spruce things up a bit with some colour without over-doing it.

smile?!

honestly your desktop must be impossible to use, even over 2 monitors.
all I have on my desktop is a few icons and AmplifiedSpeakers spinning ring thing.
simplicity is king YAY!

Ehmm, my desktop is too easy to use.. i mean i don't have any icons i usually only use the music player to the right..
it's not like my desktop is usable in many ways, it's just a hmm lets say a painting u look at it but u dont touch it... simplicity at a higher level than yours.
